Tray packaging rather than tape and reel - does that affect our feeder setup?

It changes the pick and place setup, not the part. Trays keep the cages square, which is worth something because a twisted cage makes insertion bind, but you will need a tray handler or a manual load step for low volume builds. We checked flatness on twelve pieces from three trays and all sat within 0.08 mm with none needing straightening. Confirm the SFP+ footprint against your board before ordering; this is the cage only, the transceiver is separate.

Does the minus 55 to 85 C range cover the reflow profile as well as operation?

It is the operating range of the assembled part, not a soldering limit. We ran a standard lead free profile with a 245 C peak on twenty cages and saw no dulling of the nickel plating and no loss of flatness, so reflow is fine. What the wide operating range buys you is mechanical stability in an outdoor enclosure: the cage and the transceiver expansion track closely enough that the latch does not bind after a cold soak. Verify flatness after your own profile.

There is no light pipe on this cage. How do you bring the indicators to the front?

Put two LEDs on the host board behind a small bezel window and drive them from the PHY, which keeps the optical path under your control but costs a little layout area. Alternatively route a discrete light guide as part of the enclosure moulding. Do not assume a standard SFP+ light pipe will clip onto this cage; the 9.75 mm height and 14.25 mm width leave no mounting feature for one. If the front panel indicator is mandatory, choose the variant that includes the pipe.

What finished hole size and retention should we design for the grounding pin?

A 0.9 mm finished plated through hole worked on our build, with retention above 30 N on all twelve samples and pin to cage resistance under 20 milliohms. Go much larger and the pin can sit loose enough to read intermittent after thermal cycling; go smaller and you risk deforming the cage during press. Keep the hole within 5 mm of a chassis via and avoid a long thin ground trace. Check the pin straightness on incoming trays, since a bent pin is the one defect that survives reflow.

Bench checks on the grounding pin were the part of qualification we cared about most. We measured pin to cage resistance on twelve pieces from three trays and every reading sat under 20 milliohms, with no unit showing an intermittent open after a light tug. The pin presses into a plated through hole, so we specified a 0.9 mm finished hole and confirmed the retention force held above 30 N across the batch. Cage flatness came in within 0.08 mm, which matters because a twisted cage makes the transceiver bind on insertion. Tray packaging kept all twelve square; nothing needed straightening before the pick and place feeder was set up.

This cage ships without a light pipe, so we planned the indicator differently rather than discovering it at assembly. The host board gets its own two LEDs behind a small window in the bezel, which costs a little layout area but keeps the optical path entirely under our control. We checked the 9.75 mm height and 14.25 mm width against a transceiver inserted with its bail latch closed, then measured the clearance to the nearest component at 1.2 mm. Nothing on the cage protrudes into that space. If your design relies on a light pipe to carry the LED out to the faceplate, pick the version that includes one; this one is deliberately plain.
