Yes, it is a ten p eight c jack, so any Cat5e or Cat6 lead with an RJ45 plug fits. The two extra positions carry the LED legs on the board side, they are not used by the plug.

Do the shield tabs need a bare metal contact?

Yes. Spring fingers only work against bare metal, so we mask a patch on the powder coat where the jack sits and check continuity at end of line. Against painted metal the shield looks fitted but does nothing.

Is this a gigabit part?

The title says 100/1000 Base-T and the magnetics are rated for it. We run it at gigabit on every unit. If you need 2.5G or 10G this is not the right family, because the transformer bandwidth and the return loss requirement are different.

What do the two LED colours mean?

On our build orange is speed and green is link with activity. The part is a two colour LED, so the assignment is set by how you wire it, not by the connector. Confirm the mapping you want before the board is laid out, because swapping it later means a rework.

If you are deciding between this and an unshielded part, the question is the enclosure. Ours is aluminium and bonded, so a shielded jack with good fingers measurably improved the emissions margin. On a plastic box the shield would do nothing and I would not pay for it.

Insertion loss measured 0.88dB at 100MHz against a 1.0dB limit, and the common mode rejection was good enough that we passed radiated emissions on the first attempt with no ferrite on the cable. That is not something I expected from a cost reduced magjack.

What I like about the two colour arrangement is that it survives a firmware bug. If the PHY driver fails to set the speed LED, link is still green and a technician knows the cable and the port are fine, which halves the number of calls that start with is the port dead.
