What is the recommended reflow profile for a body this heavy?

Standard lead-free, 245℃ peak, 60 to 90 seconds above liquidus, soak at 150 to 180℃ for 90 seconds. Because the body is heavy, add a support pin under the center of the jack and keep the ramp under 2℃ per second. Without the pin we measured 0.3mm of bow at peak and two cracked joints on the outer tails out of 50 boards. With the pin, 300 boards ran clean at 99.4% first pass.

Does the tab up orientation change the panel cutout compared to tab down?

Yes, the cutout is mirrored vertically. The latch sits at the top of the opening for tab up and at the bottom for tab down, so a tab down die will not work without flipping it, and flipping it moves the mounting holes. The overall opening size is the same, 16.60mm wide. If you are retrofitting, measure the existing cutout against our drawing before you commit, this is the most common fit mistake we see.

Can we get this with 30 micro inch gold for a high cycle application?

Yes, 30 micro inches on the mating area is available, about 5 working days extra and roughly 12% on price. It moves the wear through point from around 800 cycles to past 2000. Put the requirement on the PO with the drawing revision and we confirm by email before production. Do not ask for 30 on the tails, they need a solderable finish, gold there causes joint embrittlement.

Is 13.50mm the true height above the PCB, or does it include the latch?

13.50mm is measured from the PCB surface to the top of the housing, the latch is inside that envelope and does not add height. The plug body adds about 6mm on top when inserted, so plan for 20mm of total clearance above the board with a plug in. If your lid clearance is 14.2mm like ours was, the jack fits but the plug boot will touch, so check the boot length.

Can this handle PoE+ 30W on the spare pairs, or only on the data pairs?

Both, the 12 core design has enough winding capacity for 30W on either the data pairs or the spare pairs, or split across them. We tested 30W on the spare pairs for 8 hours at 45℃ and the core peaked at 71℃, inside the material rating. The limit is total power per port, not which pairs you use. Do not exceed 30W without checking with us, the 60W type 4 rating needs a different core.

What are the 4 extra contacts on the 12p8c body actually connected to?

The extra four contacts are additional transformer windings brought out to the connector, they are not spare signal pairs. On this body we use them for the center taps and a shield drain, which lets you terminate PoE current and chassis ground without an external jumper. Two of them are tied to the transformer center taps, two to the shell. If you need all 12 as separate signal paths, this is not the right part, ask us for the 12 pin signal version.

The extra contacts on the 12p8c body are useful if you need a chassis ground sense or a shield drain. We tied two of them to the shell and two to a bleed resistor, which let us drop a separate grounding clip. That saved a part and about 3mm of board edge. Worth knowing before you assume 12 pins means 12 signals.

Signal integrity at 1G over 100m Cat5e for 72 hours: zero CRC errors on all 30 units. Near end crosstalk between pairs -45 dB at 100 MHz, return loss -17 dB, common mode rejection flat through 200 MHz. The magnetics are the reason this passes, a cheap 8 core part we tried failed return loss at 250 MHz and dropped links under load.
