What is the failure mode if the cable is damaged, and how would we detect it before it causes an outage?

The usual failure mode is a rising error count on one lane rather than a hard link down, because a partial break in a twinax pair degrades the signal instead of killing it. That means you can catch it early by monitoring CRC and FEC corrected counters on the port. If a port that has been clean for months starts showing corrected errors that climb steadily, suspect the cable or the connector before the switch. A physical inspection for a kink or a crushed section usually confirms it.

Does the extra length change the latency enough to matter for a storage replication link?

The difference between 1m and 7m of copper is roughly 30 nanoseconds of propagation delay. For storage replication, even synchronous replication, that is negligible compared with the processing and protocol overhead at each end. Where length does matter is in extremely latency sensitive trading or instrumentation systems, and those would not be using 7m passive copper in the first place. For normal enterprise storage traffic, the length difference is not measurable in application terms.

The cable is very stiff. Can it be bent to follow a 90 degree corner in a cable tray?

A single 90 degree corner is fine as long as the bend radius stays above the 30mm minimum, which usually means a radius guide or a gentle sweep rather than a sharp corner. What you should avoid is repeated bending at the same point, because the conductor will work harden and the impedance will shift. Install it once, dress it properly, and do not use it as a cable you unplug and re route frequently. If the tray has a genuine sharp corner, add a corner guide.

Is 7m realistic for passive 10G, or are we at the point where we should just use fibre?

7m is at the practical limit for passive copper at 10G, which is why this part uses 24AWG and why the assembly is noticeably heavier than the short versions. It works, but the margin is thinner than at 1m, so the quality of the switch cages and the care taken during installation matter more. If your run is genuinely 7m and you cannot shorten it, copper is still viable and cheaper than optics. If the run is longer, or if the path is difficult, fibre is the better answer.

We had a specific problem: a pair of switches that could not be moved and were just too far apart for the 5m part once the tray was included. Fibre would have meant new optics on both sides and a media converter on one. This cable solved it for a fraction of the cost and has been running without intervention since the spring maintenance window.
