  • A:
At 1m, FEC is not needed for signal integrity and most 10G ports do not enable it by default. Enabling it adds a small amount of latency and is generally unnecessary at this length. The exception is if your platform requires FEC for a specific port mode or if you are aggregating with links that already use it. In that case consistency across the bundle matters more than the individual cable length, so match the setting to the rest of the group. by LINK-PP Support technique
  • A:
The assembly is rated 0 to 70℃, so 60℃ internal is within the rating but leaves only 10℃ of margin. The connector shell temperature will be higher than ambient because it sits against the switch cage, which is itself a heat source. In an outdoor enclosure I would measure the actual cage temperature rather than the air temperature before committing. If the cage runs above about 65℃, consider an industrial rated assembly or move the switch to a cooler part of the enclosure. by LINK-PP Support technique
  • A:
Cost, power and simplicity. Copper removes two transceivers per link, which cuts the bill of materials substantially, removes the heat those optics generate, and eliminates a class of failure related to module firmware and coding. The trade off is distance: copper is limited to a few metres while fibre can go much further. At 1m inside a cabinet, copper is almost always the better engineering choice unless you have a specific reason to keep the link optical. by LINK-PP Support technique
  • A:
Start with the connector, not the cable. A partially seated SFP+ latch will cause intermittent loss that looks like a cable fault. Reseat both ends and confirm the latch clicks. If that does not fix it, swap the cable to a known good port to separate a port problem from a cable problem. After that, check whether the port has any error counters climbing, and whether the flap correlates with someone working in the cabinet. Physical disturbance is the most common cause of flaps on passive copper that was previously stable. by LINK-PP Support technique

Ran a 10G iperf test between two hosts on these and got line rate with no retransmits, which is what you want from a passive assembly.

I compared the cost against buying SFP+ optics and patch cords for the same forty links. The copper came out at roughly a third of the price, with no transceiver to fail and no fibre cleaning to worry about. The only trade off is distance, and at 1m that is not a trade off at all. Payback was immediate.

The connector latches are the metal tab type and they release cleanly. On cheaper cables the plastic tab snaps after a few dozen insertions.

This is the length we use for top of rack to the first server U. One metre leaves a small service loop without coiling excess behind the rail.

We ordered forty for a floor refresh. Delivery came in two boxes, both labelled with the part number and length, which made goods in easy.
