It integrates several practical features: an 850nm VCSEL source, a 100m reach on OM3, a standard duplex LC/UPC connector, and built‑in DOM for live diagnostics. Together, these make the module a straightforward choice for short‑range storage connections.
This module is a hot-pluggable SFP+ form factor designed specifically for 16G Fibre Channel environments. It uses a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) at 850nm and pairs with OM3 multi-mode fiber. The module complies with SFF-8472 digital diagnostics and 16GFC physical layer specifications.
At 16Gbps line rate, this transceiver supports full-speed storage traffic without link bottlenecks. It auto-negotiates down to 8G and 4G Fibre Channel for backward compatibility with older switches. The module also works with both short-wave (850nm) optics and standard multi-mode cabling infrastructure.
The 850nm wavelength is well-suited for multi-mode fiber because it matches the fiber’s low‑loss window around 850nm. This allows the use of low-cost VCSEL drivers and efficient optical coupling. Unlike long-wave (1310nm) modules, the 850nm design reduces component cost for short‑haul links.
Over OM3 class multi-mode fiber, the module maintains a clean optical eye diagram up to 100m. This distance covers typical top-of-rack to end-of-row cabling in storage arrays. No repeater or signal regeneration is needed within that range, keeping link design simple.
The duplex LC/UPC connector enables precise fiber alignment for transmit and receive channels. It supports secure and repeatable connections during installation. This interface is widely used, ensuring compatibility with existing fiber infrastructure.
DOM enables the host to read laser bias current, receiver optical power, module temperature, and supply voltage instantly. These readings can be used to set warning thresholds or to detect fiber link degradation before a failure occurs. The diagnostic data is accessed via the standard I²C interface over the SFP+ connector pins.
