Q: Do you code the EEPROM for a specific switch brand, and will the coding survive a switch firmware upgrade? By W***e
A: Yes, we can pre-code the EEPROM to the vendor string your switch expects, and the coding is written to the module, so a firmware upgrade on the switch does not change it. Tell us the brand and model when ordering. If you already have uncoded units, we can also advise on the correct part number to request for the next batch. By admin
Q: Our CWDM mux already carries 1550nm. Can I add this 1570nm module to the same mux without replacing it? By E***z
A: Yes, as long as the mux is a standard CWDM unit with a 20nm grid. 1570nm is a normal CWDM channel and sits on its own port, so it will not interfere with 1550. Just confirm the mux port is labelled 1570 and not a combined or wideband port, and check the insertion loss of that port when you recalculate the link budget. By admin
Q: How can my field team tell the 1550 and 1570 versions apart during installation? By A***l
A: Each module has the full part number and wavelength printed on the label, and the wavelength is also readable in the DOM wavelength field over the I2C bus. For a mixed shelf we suggest labelling the mux port as well, because the housings are identical. Mis-cabling two adjacent CWDM channels is the most common installation error we hear about. By admin
Q: Would I need an attenuator if I use this 80km optic on a 15km span? By M***s
A: Probably yes. Receiver overload for this part is around -1dBm, and a 15km span typically delivers only 4 to 5dB of loss, which would put you close to or above that limit. A 10dB pad is a safe starting point. Measure the receive power after installation and aim for something between -8 and -18dBm. By admin
Q: Is this module suitable for 1G Fibre Channel, or is it Ethernet only? By P***z
A: It works for both. 1G Fibre Channel runs at 1.0625Gbps, which is inside the 1.25Gbps capability of this module, so it will carry FC traffic as long as the switch port is configured for 1G FC and not Ethernet framing. We have customers running it on Brocade and Cisco MDS gear for SAN extension over single mode. By admin
