Ask a Question
  • A:
You lose the electrical isolation that fibre provides, which matters if the two ends are on different power systems or different ground potentials. You also lose the ability to test the link with an optical power meter, so fault finding becomes a swap and check process. On the positive side you remove two transceivers, their heat and their firmware, and you gain a link that a junior engineer can replace without any configuration knowledge. For links inside the same row, that trade is usually worth it. by LINK-PP Technical Support
  • A:
Keep it separated. Passive copper carrying high speed data is susceptible to noise coupling from mains cables, and while the differential signalling is reasonably robust, a long parallel run next to power is asking for trouble. Most standards require a minimum separation, often 50mm or more depending on the voltage and the tray construction. Cross mains cables at right angles if you must cross, and never run them in the same bundle for any distance. by LINK-PP Technical Support
  • A:
5m gives you about 50cm of margin, which is workable but tight once you allow for a service loop at each end. If your measurement of 4.5m is approximate, the 7m is the safer choice because the extra length can be dressed in a gentle curve without a coil. The penalty for going longer is a slightly heavier cable and marginally more loss, both of which are acceptable. The penalty for going too short is a connector under tension, which is much worse. by LINK-PP Technical Support
  • A:
Because loss per metre increases as the conductor gets thinner, and at 5m a 30AWG assembly would attenuate the 10G signal beyond what the receiver can recover reliably. 24AWG has a larger cross section and lower resistance, which keeps the insertion loss inside the 10GBASE-CU budget at that length. The trade off is mechanical: the cable is thicker and much stiffer, so it needs a different approach to routing than the short assemblies. by LINK-PP Technical Support

We needed 10G between cabinets in the same row and did not want another pair of optics, so we tried the 5m version. It has been stable for four months.

The jacket is marked with the length every metre, which is handy when you are pulling several of them at once.

Six months, twenty four links, zero replacements. I have nothing interesting to report and that is a good thing.

Cost comparison was straightforward. Two SFP+ optics plus a 5m fibre patch was around four times the price of one of these, and we had a spare optics budget line we could redirect. The links have been up since spring with no intervention, and the switch logs show no CRC errors on any of the twelve.
