Q: On a 70km span with eight splices, how much margin should I expect to have left? By M***n
A: A typical 70km single mode span with eight splices and four connectors runs around 22 to 24dB of loss. With launch power near +2dBm and receiver sensitivity of -26dBm, you have roughly 28dB of budget, so about 4 to 6dB of headroom. I would still measure the receive level after installation and keep it below -8dBm to stay clear of overload on very short spans. By admin
Q: Can I run this 1550nm module on the same duplex fibre pair as our existing 1310nm 40km link? By M***z
A: Not on the same pair at the same time. Both modules transmit in the same direction on the same strand, so they would collide. If you want to reuse that strand, put a CWDM mux at each end and move the second service to another CWDM channel such as 1470 or 1490. The 1550 channel here works fine through any standard 20nm CWDM grid mux, and the 1310 link can stay on a wideband port. By admin
Q: Our switch only supports 1000BASE-X with autonegotiation disabled. Will this module link up in that mode? By C***r
A: Yes. The module is a fixed 1.25Gbps optical interface with no rate negotiation of its own, so set the port to 1000BASE-X, autoneg off, and it will come up. We test every unit at 1.25Gbps with a fixed rate pattern. DDM is available either way, and the SFF-8472 registers are standard so your NMS should poll it without a custom MIB. By admin
