Questions & Answers

Ask a Question
No data
  • Q: Can this 40km module work on a 12km span without an attenuator? By S***z

A: It will usually link, but it is not ideal. Launch power is -5 to 0dBm and receiver overload is around -1dBm, so a 12km span with low loss can push you close to the overload point and cause errors under temperature change. A 5dB pad is the usual fix, and we recommend measuring receive power and keeping it between -8 and -18dBm. By admin

  • Q: Our CWDM mux already carries a 1550nm service. Can this 1310nm module share the same mux? By H***t

A: Only if the mux has a dedicated 1310 or wideband port. 1310nm is outside the standard CWDM channel grid, so it normally goes through a separate wideband port or a dual window device. Check the mux datasheet for a 1310 pass band before you plan the link, otherwise the insertion loss will be very high. By admin

  • Q: Will these negotiate down to 100Mbps on older access equipment? By A***k

A: Yes, they will carry 100Mbps traffic as long as the switch port supports 100BASE-FX or a compatible 100M optical mode. The optic itself is rate transparent up to 1.25Gbps. On older line cards we recommend fixing the port speed rather than using autonegotiation, because some legacy devices do not advertise 100M optical correctly. By admin

Deployed 18 of these on a metro access layer where the previous optics were 80km parts used on 20km spans. We had been padding them down, which is wasteful. Moving to 40km optics removed the pads, simplified the bill of materials, and the links still show healthy receive power. Small change, real operational benefit.

For fibre to the building work this is the module I keep coming back to. Most of our drops are 8 to 18km, so a 40km optic with -5 to 0dBm launch power fits our passive splitter budget better than an 80km part. I measured TX at -2.3dBm on three units, right in the middle of the spec. DDM temperature tracking has been useful in unheated street cabinets.

We use these for 20 to 30km access links from our POP out to customer sites. The 1310nm zero dispersion window and the 40km rating give us margin without paying for 80km parts.

I run maintenance for about 90km of access fibre and keep a stock of these as spares. They are interchangeable with our existing 1310nm 40km parts, which makes swap outs quick during an outage. The latch mechanism is metal and positive, not the flimsy plastic tab you get on some budget SFPs.

We run a small regional ISP and price per port matters. These 1G SFP 1310nm modules cost noticeably less than the OEM equivalents and we have not seen a failure in the first 60 units over six months. What I check on arrival is the EEPROM vendor string, because our provisioning tool reads it. All reported consistently, so no surprises during rollout.

Our access ring runs 28 to 36km between nodes, all single mode with a handful of splices. These 1310nm 40km modules hit the sweet spot, enough reach with real margin, but not so much launch power that we need pads on the short segments. Receive levels land between -16 and -19dBm. Eight months of operation, zero link flaps and no DOM alarms, and the price let us standardize across 40 sites.

We use these for connecting remote offices at 15 to 25km. The modules negotiate 1000BASE-X style links on our switches and the DOM page reports TX power, RX power and temperature correctly. Our NMS polls them every five minutes with no timeouts. I have had cheaper optics fail this test, so this is a good sign.

The 40km reach is honest. I tested a 39.5km spool with 4dB of added attenuation and the link stayed error free at 1.25G for 12 hours, with receive power at -22dBm, still 2dB above the -24dBm sensitivity. That tells me these will survive a bad splice or a dirty connector in the field. Solid medium haul SFP for the money.

We had a link that kept dropping at 35km with generic optics. Swapped to these and the BER cleared up. Turned out to be marginal receive power, and the -24dBm sensitivity fixed it.

Used these in an industrial park distribution network with 12 nodes in a ring. Distances range from 6 to 31km, so we keep a couple of 5dB pads for the short hops. The 1310nm wavelength keeps chromatic dispersion low on our older fibre, and BER testing came back clean on all links.

We bought a mix of these and the 80km version to cover different span lengths. The 40km part is our default for anything under 30km because the cost is lower and the link budget is easier to manage. Both use the same duplex LC interface, so patch cords and panels are shared.

Good value for a 40km SFP. We pair it with a 5dB attenuator on short 8km runs because the receiver is sensitive, which is normal for this class of optic.
