Q: Does it support 25G with RS-FEC and 10G without FEC on the same module? By P***h
A: Yes. FEC is a function of the switch port, not the optic. Enable RS-FEC for 25G as required by 25GBASE-SR, and run 10G without FEC or with BASE-R FEC depending on your platform. The module passes traffic transparently in both modes, and we test both 10G and 25G before shipping. By admin
Q: We plan to use these for 5G fronthaul. Will the optic add any latency or jitter to the eCPRI link? By A***z
A: No measurable contribution. The module is a physical layer device with no buffering or retiming beyond the standard CDR, so it adds only propagation delay. In our own testing the link budget and BER stayed clean at 25G with RS-FEC, and customers running eCPRI fronthaul report no timing degradation after swapping to these. By admin
Q: Will this 25G module also work at 10G in an SFP+ port, or does it need an SFP28 cage? By A***t
A: For 25G you need an SFP28 cage and a switch port rated for 25G. For 10G it will run in an SFP28 cage configured to 10G. In a plain SFP+ cage it is mechanically compatible, but we recommend checking with the switch vendor first, because some SFP+ ports do not supply the required clock and I2C behaviour for a dual rate SFP28 module. Q: What distance can I realistically get over OM3 with patch panels in the path? By C***s
A: The module is rated for 70m over OM3 and 300m over OM4. In a real installation with two patch panels and several connectors, plan for about 55 to 60m on OM3 and around 250 to 270m on OM4. Clean the end faces before mating, because contaminated OM3 connectors are the usual cause of 25G link errors at these distances. By admin
