Q: Can this 40km module work on a 12km span without an attenuator? By S***z
A: It will usually link, but it is not ideal. Launch power is -5 to 0dBm and receiver overload is around -1dBm, so a 12km span with low loss can push you close to the overload point and cause errors under temperature change. A 5dB pad is the usual fix, and we recommend measuring receive power and keeping it between -8 and -18dBm. By admin
Q: Our CWDM mux already carries a 1550nm service. Can this 1310nm module share the same mux? By H***t
A: Only if the mux has a dedicated 1310 or wideband port. 1310nm is outside the standard CWDM channel grid, so it normally goes through a separate wideband port or a dual window device. Check the mux datasheet for a 1310 pass band before you plan the link, otherwise the insertion loss will be very high. By admin
Q: Will these negotiate down to 100Mbps on older access equipment? By A***k
A: Yes, they will carry 100Mbps traffic as long as the switch port supports 100BASE-FX or a compatible 100M optical mode. The optic itself is rate transparent up to 1.25Gbps. On older line cards we recommend fixing the port speed rather than using autonegotiation, because some legacy devices do not advertise 100M optical correctly. By admin
