What is the LED polarity, common anode or common cathode, and which pin is which?

Both LEDs are common anode, the anode pins are tied together internally and go to your supply rail, then you sink the cathode pins to light them. Pinout on the datasheet drawing shows the two anodes on the outer pins of the LED block and the cathodes next to them. If you need common cathode for a sourcing driver, we can build it as a special, but there is a 2000 piece minimum because the lead frame changes.

Is this jack usable for gigabit if we supply our own magnetics externally?

No, and this is a common misunderstanding. This is a magjack, the transformer is molded inside, so there is no way to bypass it. The internal magnetics are 4 core per port with a bandwidth that rolls off around 100 MHz, which is fine for 10/100 and not enough for 1000BASE-T. If you need gigabit in a 1x1 tab up footprint, order LPJG17308-2AHNL, same body, 8 cores, and it is a drop in on the board.

Can the LEDs be driven directly from a 5V rail without a resistor, or will that burn them out?

Do not drive them from 5V without a resistor, the LED forward voltage is only about 2.05V so 5V across the die would push far past the 25mA limit and kill it in seconds. At 5V use 150 ohm for about 20mA, or 330 ohm for a dimmer 9mA which is plenty on a panel. If your PHY drives the LED pins directly, check its sink capability, some parts only handle 10mA and you will need a buffer.

For a 10/100 part, the magnetics are better than I expected. Insertion loss 0.75 dB at 100 MHz, crosstalk -45 dB between pairs, common mode rejection flat through 200 MHz. We had been paying almost double for a brand part with the same numbers. Ran a 300 unit build, no functional failures.

Mechanical: 400 mating cycles per port on 10 samples, retention went from 11N to 8.6N, still above our 8N minimum. EMI tabs kept their spring, no permanent set. The plastic around the LED windows showed no cracking, that area is thin and it is where I expected a failure. It held up fine.

Tested LED consistency because that is where cheap parts fail. Across 50 units: green forward voltage 2.04V to 2.11V, yellow 2.01V to 2.08V, brightness 17 to 20 mcd at 20mA. One resistor value works for the whole build. No flicker, no partial die, which I have seen on parts costing less than this.
